CSCS card, (or Construction Skills Certification Scheme) was introduced in 1995 with a view to becoming an Industry standard as a sign of Health and Safety competency on construction sites. Unlike most professional membership schemes, this one is aimed more at workers on-site (although there are cards available for all construction industry roles).
When I applied for my first CSCS card, industry reaction to the scheme was mixed. However, the scheme still exists and there are now over 1.5 million cscs card holders. So whilst there is some way to go before calling it an ‘industry standard’ at least it has stood the test of time.
Many main contractors operate CSCS card schemes on their sitesWhat Is It?
The CSCS card scheme aims to improve skill levels and competency on-site in order to reduce accidents and injuries whilst at the same time increasing productivity. The thinking is that if a contractor or construction company is seen to be using only staff who hold a CSCS card then this sends a strong message to clients, the HSE, and the general public that they are committed to the highest standards of safety.
Is it Mandatory?
No. It’s a voluntary scheme but you may find that certain contractors or clients will insist that only staff holding a CSCS card be allowed onto site. Therefore by not having one you may be limiting your options. Now there is also a CSCS smartcard version available. The chip installed on it means that it can double as a site security barrier pass or used for clocking in, and it is hoped that this will further encourage uptake of the scheme.
How Do I get One?
CSCS card costs around £30 and there are a number of different cscs cards available depending on your role in the construction process. There are currently 8 types of CSCS card and 10 affiliated schemes.
To apply, you can call 0844 248 5262 where they’ll take your details and the appropriate payment. The main information you’ll need to have ready is your name, address, date of birth, and your national insurance number and they’ll send you an application form in the post. Alternatively you can print the application form off their website.
What about the Test?
Before you can apply for the CSCS card you will have to take the health and safety test. The exact test you’ll take will depend on your role in the construction process and the type of CSCS card you’re applying for. The test can be booked at the same time as you apply for the CSCS card and costs £17.50.
Whilst the test should be relatively straightforward, it’s a good idea to brush up prior to the test by getting the CITB Health and Safety test guide which is also available as a CD-ROM. There are a few questions relating to numbers and figures that are worth committing to memory.
Is it just for Site Operatives?
You can probably get by without a CSCS card if you’re a none site based construction professional but it doesn’t hurt to have one and you can probably get your employer to cover the cost.
The professionally qualified persons CSCS card can be applied for by anybody in with a qualification from the main professional bodies such as ICE and RIBA. There is a complete list of applicable professional bodies on the website.
As well as having achieved the competency standards of your professional body, you’ll need to have two years of verified CPD and also undertake the ConstructionSkills Managerial and Professional health and safety test.
Anything Else?
The process is pretty straightforward, you just need to ensure that you are applying for the correct CSCS card for your role. Also it can take a couple of weeks after you’ve passed the test for the pack to come through so be patient.
If you’re are looking to promote and enforce a CSCS card scheme on your site or in your business then there is some useful information and also some downloadabe posters and literature on their website.
